Visa & Mastercard Chargeback Thresholds Explained (2026)

Every high-risk merchant needs to know these numbers. Exceed them and your processor will terminate your MID — often without warning.

Quick Reference

Visa Early Warning: 0.65%  |  Visa Standard: 0.9%  |  Visa Excessive (termination): 1.8%
Mastercard threshold: 1.0% with 100+ disputes/month

What is a chargeback threshold?

A chargeback threshold is the maximum dispute rate a merchant can maintain before their card network (Visa or Mastercard) places them in a monitoring program — or terminates their ability to accept cards entirely. Your chargeback rate is calculated monthly as: number of chargebacks ÷ number of transactions × 100.

Processors are required by Visa and Mastercard to enforce these thresholds. If you exceed them for multiple consecutive months, your acquirer will terminate your MID (Merchant ID) and potentially place you on the MATCH list — a permanent industry blacklist.

Visa Chargeback Monitoring Program (VAMP)

Visa's program has three escalating tiers:

Early Warning: 0.65% / 75+ disputes

Processor notified. You should take immediate action.

Standard: 0.9% / 100+ disputes

Formal monitoring begins. Monthly fees apply ($25–$50/dispute).

Excessive: 1.8% / 1,000+ disputes

Highest fees. MID termination imminent if not resolved within 3 months.

Mastercard Excessive Chargeback Program (ECP)

Mastercard's threshold is simpler: 1.0% chargeback rate AND 100+ chargebacks per month. Both conditions must be true. Merchants in ECP pay $1,000/month in fees and face escalating penalties. At 1.5%+ for 3 months, termination is standard.

What happens when you breach a threshold?

Breaching a threshold triggers a sequence that most merchants don't survive:

  1. 1Your acquirer receives a notification from Visa/Mastercard.
  2. 2Your processing fees increase immediately (up to $100/dispute).
  3. 3You receive a formal remediation plan request.
  4. 4If not resolved in 3–6 months, your MID is terminated.
  5. 5You may be placed on the MATCH list, blocking you from new accounts.

How to stay below the threshold

The most effective tactics for high-risk merchants:

Monitor your chargeback rate in real time

HighRiskIntel shows you your exact dispute ratio, flags transactions before they become chargebacks, and alerts you when you're approaching Visa/Mastercard thresholds.
